History of Tamworth and
Mt. Washington Valley
|
|
|
If you are looking for the Tamworth Inn we are
sorry to say it will be demolished soon. The last owners of the Inn
(Debby & Denise Sells and Bobby & Crytal Chris Allan) lasted
barely a year before failing and losing the inn to foreclosure. The
local papers reported that the new owner will demolish the Tamworth Inn
and plans to build a distillery. In commemoration of the long history
of the Inn we will be offering limited edition prints of the original
Harding Mudge Bush watercolor of the Inn that hung in the lobby for
years. If you are interested in reserving one of these true pieces of
history please contact us.
Tamworth and the
Mt.
Washington
Valley have a rich history and have been a mecca for outdoor enthusist
for centuries. In the late 1700's an ore deposit was discovered
south of Conway,
New Hampshire along the Bear Camp River. Over the years, the deposit
was mined and a nail making industry was formed in the
town of Tamworth. By 1833, the town had grown to a size where the
Concord, Massachusetts to Conway, NH stage line was servicing the
town. At the
turn of the century, the ore deposit gave out and logging became the
primary industry. Enjoy a quintessential and historic New England village central to attractions alpine and cross country (nordic) skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, cycling, fly fishing, antiques and outlet shopping.
